Term Limits

The hue and cry is, too many of our Representatives in the House stay in office too long and we can’t get rid of them……TRUE.

LIMIT THEIR TERM !!, LIMIT THEIR TERM !!, is the cry going across the country.  AMEND THE CONSTITUTION!!

Sounds great!  Do something to get the bums out.  Limiting their term Constitutionally is the only answer.

Is Term Limits the answer to the problem?……NO.

Do we really need an Amendment……NO.

What we need is to FOLLOW THE CONSTITUTION.   ARTICLE 1, SECTION 2 IS THE ANSWER, WE SIMPLY AREN’T FOLLOWING IT.  WHY?

ARTICLE 1, SECTION 2: “The number of Representatives shall not exceed one for every thirty Thousand, but each State shall have at Least on Representative”.   The Census Bureau was established for the purpose of determining the population of the country every 10 years to enable the government to set the number of Representatives each State would have for the coming 10 years based upon the 30,000 formula.

Following the Constitution, the young American Republic worked well for over 100 years to the end of the 19th Century as the country was in its most free and prosperous period.  After the Civil War, the Progressives and the Bankers gradually took over the government and without a Constitutional Amendment simply passed laws to keep the number of Representatives “under control”.  Our Republic ended with the Reapportionment Act of 1929 and we became a Democracy without the full compliment of Representation the Constitution guaranteed its People so they could no longer run their country by local Representation.  The true vote  for Representation was taken from the People by stealth and corruption.

Today, in round numbers, using a population figure of 320,000,000 Million, we have ONE Representative for approximately 720,000 people.  By any stretch of the imagination, that is NOT LOCAL REPRESENTATION.  What we have is Representation by Special Interest Groups, Bankers, and Career Politicians!  The House of Representatives is no longer the Peoples’ House (as it used to be called), it is the Stolen Democratic Bureaucratic House.

The People are once again being given the short end of the straw.  Term Limits is like trying to fix a broken arm with a band-aid.    Term Limits doesn’t help the problem, it exacerbates the problem.  Example:  California has had term limits since the 1990’s and it is in the worst shape ever and is a one-party government.

TERM LIMITS FURTHER REMOVES WE THE PEOPLE FROM GOVERNING.

WE NEED TO VOTE THE BUMS OUT, NOT TERM LIMIT THEM.

Limiting the term of a Representative Servant of the People is not the answer or it would be in the Constitution.   There was little problem with Representatives staying too long in power until the beginning of the 20th Century.  Yes, there were some who served for extended years, but maybe this was because the People wanted them to serve because they were doing a good job.  Also, they were not treated like employees with benefits but rather like servants of the People. What we have now was created largely from the mid to late 20th Century and extended into the 21st Century giving us not Representatives but Employees beholden to the government system and the Special Interests, not the People.

Once again, we are chasing the wrong solution which will only make things worse, not better; Let’s use California as an example.  Term limits were voted in by Proposition in the 1990’s and California is now a one- party dictatorship state.

THIS IS A TRAP.

WHEN “WE THE PEOPLE” PUT AN ARTIFICAL END DATE TO A PUBLIC SERVANT’S SERVICE, YOU LOSE THAT SERVANT, AND YOU ALSO TAKE AWAY THE POWER OF THE PEOPLE TO CONTROL THE GOVERNMENT THE PEOPLE MADE, SO THAT IT IS NO LONGER THEIRS AND BECOMES INSTEAD, “WE THE GOVERNMENT”.

Let us, “We the People”, reverse course and return to having Representation per the Constitution as it stands.   IF an Amendment is needed, it is not for Term Limits, but rather to increase the number of constituents per Representative from 30,000 to 50,000.

In the whole world of Democracies, only 9 have a worse voter turnout than America.  Why?  Because Americans have lost faith in their vote.  Consequently, most voters don’t even know who their Representative is.  Much of the problem is they never see their Representative.  He or she may live hundreds of miles away.  This is not what was intended by the people who put their very lives at stake to give us Representative Government in 1776.

Following the Constitution will take America, the originator of Representative Government, from last place among the other 29 countries with Representative government, again to first place.  We will need a new, bigger House, which we need anyway.  Most of our government can be run by our Representatives from home like corporations.  Old rules of House order will give way to modern modes of communication.  Once again America will lead the way.

“More Representatives equal more government and more cost”, the people cry.    Again, NO.  More Representatives equal Less Government.  Once again, don’t fall into this faulty logic.  More Representatives need less staff, fewer offices, less travel, etc.  We the taxpayers should pay for the service of our chosen Representative to run the government to represent our needs and desires, not bureaucrats.  Bureaucrats are there for a career.  Bureaucrats are NOT Accountable or Accessible to the People, Representatives are.

TAKE BACK YOUR GOVERNMENT.  TERM LIMITS IS THE WRONG DIRECTION.
